Watkins/Maresh/Laningham: Out of Nowhere (live)

I play every Thursday at The Brass House in Austin, Texas, 6-8:30pm, with two Austin music legends – quitarist Mitch Watkins and bassist Chris Maresh. I met Mitch in 1981 and he has a been a close friend, mentor, and inspiration ever since. He and the other members of the group Passenger set the bar very high for the rest of us in Austin and his work as sideman and/or producer for the likes of Leonard Cohen, Lyle Lovett, Abra Moore, Tina Lear, KT Oslin, Barabra Dennerline, Benny Wallace, Jerry Jeff Walker, and others places him among the best musical minds Texas has produced.

I met Chris Maresh around 1983 when he first arrived in Austin as a student at the University of Texas. He was already playing way beyond his years. Today, he is a top call bassist in Texas, a Grammy nominated composer, and has toured and recorded with Eric Johnson & Mike Stern, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Pinetop Perkins, Mitch Watkins, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Marcia Ball, Michael McDonald, Monte Montgomery, Ferenc Illenyi, Kellye Gray, Ellis Marsalis, just to name a few.

The three of played together years ago in the Mitch Watkins Group. Now we get together every Thursday at The Brass House in Austin, 6-8:30pm. Come and see us if you’re in the neighborhood.
