Scott Laningham Music News: February 2016

What a dichotomous start to the new year. It was tough losing so many legends in the entertainment industry — David Bowie, Glenn Fry, Alan Rickman, Vilmos Zsigmond, Natalie Cole, to name a few. At the same time I found myself knee deep in some thrilling work with Alejandro Escovedo and a terrific band — Mitch Watkins, Julie Christensen, Sean Giddings, Elias Haslanger, Daniel Durham, Brian Standefer, Matt Fish, Karla Manzur, and Chris Holston.

We played The ACL Moody Theatre on January 9, with A Thousand Kisses Deep: The Leonard Cohen Influence, featuring a blend of Cohen and Escovedo originals. The majority of that band then went to NYC for two nights at the City Winery during Snowmageddon, which wasn’t so bad since our SoHo-area hotel was two blocks from the venue.
In spite of all that snow and a city-wide ban on motorized travel on Saturday night, the place was packed both nights. It was surreal rocking a packed house on Saturday as we gazed beyond the bobbing heads to the windows revealing snow blowing 50mph in the streets.

Elizabeth and I, along with Sean and Daniel, ventured to Central Park after the blizzard. It was beautiful. Sean and Daniel headed south and E and I walked the Upper West Side, visited Zabar Deli, and the site of my old one-room apartment from 1985. Fun indeed. Elizabeth and I flew back to Austin on Monday after the storm just in time for Church on Monday at the Continental Gallery with Dr. James Polk, Tommy Howard, and Sam Pankey filing in for Daniel, still awaiting a flight, along with Eli, back in NYC.

Another version of the band played The City Winery in Chicago last weekend to wrap up a terrific January of music adventures.

I’m also excited to be on one cut on Van Wilks’s new CD “21st Century Blues.” The cut is “She Makes Me Crazy” and was written by Christopher Cross and features both Van and Malford Milligan on vocals with CC joining on guitar. It’s a great CD by a Texas guitar legend.
