I’m in a new band debuting June 8 at One2One in Austin. Freedonia is John Fremgen (bass), Eddy Hobizal (keys), Christopher Cross (guitar/vocals), James Fenner (percussion), Justin Vasquez (soprano & alto saxes), Russell Haight (tenor sax), Seth Carper (tenor sax), and moi on drums. Sophisticated original pop with jazz influences. All new tunes from Christopher and Eddy and a refined pop sound not often heard in Austin. While improv-driven music has been home base, so to speak, for my musical career, I’ve long had a special place in my heart for the art of good pop music, especially the sounds I grew up with in the 70s & 80s. If you ever enjoyed Steely Dan, The Doobies, Chicago, Christopher Cross, etc., then you’ll want to check out this band. We’ll have a debut CD ready for purchase at the June 8 One2One date. It is hard getting the schedules of so many musicians to line up, so I hope you’ll come out and help us make the first gig a success.
TresMusicos‘ Thursday early show residency at the Elephant Room continues. We are off May 24 and June 7, but you can catch us regularly and hear the ever-evolving creativity of this wonderful trio with Mitch Watkins (guitar) and Chris Maresh (bass) that is a highlight of my week. We’ve been recording regularly on Thursdays with the plan to release a live CD soon. And we’ve captured some great stuff. Here’s a recent sample below with Sean Giddings joining us on piano.
Church on Monday has passed the five-year mark of Monday residency at the Continental Gallery. If you haven’t been to one of our 90-minute roof raising sessions in a while, you’re missing out. Dr. James Polk continues to inspire and amaze us, Elias Haslanger leads as only he can, and Tommy Howard, Daniel Durham, and I round out the most soulful band as I’ve ever been a part of.
Hope to see you at a gig soon.
